Product description
An original Rimini Blu ceramic vase designed by Aldo Londi for Bitossi, one of the most recognizable collections of Italian post-war ceramic design. Introduced in 1959, the Rimini Blu series became celebrated for its extraordinary combination of deeply impressed geometric decoration and luminous blue crystalline glazes. This example features a beautifully balanced, slightly tapered form decorated with alternating bands of geometric squares, stars, dots and linear impressions. The richly layered glaze shifts between intense cobalt blue, turquoise, petrol and subtle green tones, allowing the impressed decoration to emerge with remarkable depth and brilliance. Aldo Londi (1911–2003), painter, sculptor and master ceramist, collaborated with Bitossi for more than fifty years, first as artistic director and later as a designer. His experimental approach to texture, color and traditional ceramic techniques played a major role in establishing Bitossi as one of the defining names of Italian Mid-Century Modern design. Rimini Blu is perhaps Londi’s most enduring achievement. Rather than relying on color alone, the series combines surface, relief and glaze into a highly tactile decorative language. Each impressed element catches the glaze differently, producing the characteristic variations from deep midnight blue to brilliant turquoise that make individual examples visually unique. The underside of this vase retains its original hand-written “ITALY 724” marking. At 16 cm in height, it has an especially harmonious scale and strong sculptural presence. A highly collectible example of Italian post-war ceramics, combining traditional craftsmanship with the expressive material experimentation that defined the best Italian design of the 1960s.
