“Alcove in Black Stockings” (2026) is a unique contemporary artwork by Parisian artist Max-Daniel. In this work, the artist explores themes such as intimacy, observation, and atmosphere, where classical painting and modern digital techniques come together in a single layered composition.
Technique and Execution
This work is constructed using a hybrid method in which digital image construction is combined with traditional painting techniques. Multiple layers of oil paint glazes and hand-applied accents were applied to a high-quality pigment print, creating a rich sense of depth and a subtle, almost velvety appearance. The surface was finished with a glossy Sennelier varnish, which further enhances the color contrast and the interplay of light.
Composition and Appearance
The scene depicts a red-haired woman in a deep blue kimono, placed within a warm and intimate interior setting. The high-contrast presence of a black and white cat adds a mysterious and almost cinematic tension to the image. The interplay of ochre yellow, dark blue, and red tones creates a sensual and theatrical atmosphere that is highly decorative without losing refinement.
About the artist
Max-Daniel holds a doctorate in Art and Art History from the Sorbonne in Paris. His work moves between postmodern figuration, digital visual culture, and classical painting traditions. By reinterpreting historical techniques within a contemporary context, unique works emerge that bear a strong signature, both technically and visually.
