A rare, characteristic set of 5 original ‘bentwood’ bistro chairs by the renowned manufacturer Fischel, produced in Czechoslovakia around the 1920s/1930s. Featuring the original branded stamp "FISCHEL TCHECOSLOV." under the seat; some chairs also retain the original paper factory label.
The chairs feature gracefully curved steam-bent wooden frames with the ‘pressed wood’ stripe pattern characteristic of this model in the seat and backrest. These are not carved into the wood but pressed using a heavy hydraulic press and a metal stamp. Fine examples of the Viennese and Art Nouveau tradition of steam-bent beechwood.
Alongside Thonet, Fischel was one of the leading producers of bentwood furniture and was known for high-quality café chairs used throughout Europe.
The chairs are in their fully original, unrestored condition. This means that they have perfectly retained their authentic lacquer, aged patina, and historic appearance. Despite their respectable age, the construction of all 5 chairs is still sturdy, with the original brass connections.
The chairs have stood the test of time and bear the marks of a rich life, which gives them their unique character:
• The chairs show normal signs of use (scratches/superficial damage to the seat edges, back of the backrest, and legs) appropriate for their age.
• One chair shows some light, old (and now completely inactive) woodworm damage. This chair also has damage at the top of the backrest, front and back.
• Two other chairs have minor damage to the back of the backrest.
• Structurally, the chairs are sturdy and in good working order.
The chairs are sold exclusively as a complete set of 5. A beautiful and atmospheric set for the dining table, in a hospitality establishment, or for the vintage collector.
