In the late 19th century, as Japan opened up more to the world during the Meiji era, its porcelains began to travel to the West. They carried with them a world of imagery composed of distant mountains, wind-bent pines, pavilions, and mist-shrouded landscapes. These four cups and their saucers belong to this universe. On gently ivory-white porcelain, delicate blue camaieu landscapes unfold. Mount Fuji can be glimpsed in the distance, sometimes barely sketched, while in the foreground appear trees, rocks, a pavilion, a bridge, or a few birds crossing the sky. The true charm of this set lies in the fact that the landscape is not simply repeated. From one piece to another, the scene evolves. The saucers become almost four small circular prints, each offering its own horizon. The blue is sometimes deep, sometimes extremely light, blending into the whiteness of the porcelain to suggest mist and distance. The cups, low and widely open, echo this same delicacy. A simple blue line highlights their contours and small handles, giving the landscape full space to express itself. Beneath the pieces appears a Japanese mark comprising the characters 大日本, Dai Nippon, which can be translated as "Great Japan". This phrasing is found on Japanese porcelains from the Meiji era and here constitutes a valuable element for placing the set in its historical context. The craftsmanship, forms, treatment of blue, and this mark point to the late Meiji period, around . More than a century separates us from the table for which they were created. Together, the four cups and their four saucers form a particularly poetic set, somewhere between the art of tea and Japanese printmaking.
