Product description
Two antique stoneware storage jars, of varying sizes, tell the story of an era when these robust containers naturally occupied kitchens, utility rooms, and larders. Their bulbous shape, two pierced side lugs, and narrow openings are characteristic of utilitarian pots designed for food preservation. The lugs notably allowed for securing or tying down their closure system, which is now missing. The stoneware features a beautiful, rich, and glossy deep brown glaze, with shades ranging from dark caramel to mahogany. The concentric striations that encircle the top of both jars beautifully emphasize the wheel-thrown craftsmanship and lend them true decorative interest. Old capacity markings are still visible on their bellies, reminding us of their original purpose. The smaller one measures approximately 9 cm in height, with an opening of about 4.5 cm in diameter. The larger one measures approximately 11 cm in height, with an opening of about 6 cm in diameter. These two pieces have retained the irregularities of their making and the traces of time characteristic of utilitarian stoneware. The rim of the larger pot shows some small old marks visible in the photographs, without detracting from its character. Together, they form a lovely duo of antique stoneware, easy to integrate into a kitchen, on a wooden shelf, in a collection of folk pottery, or amidst more contemporary objects to play on the contrast of materials.
