"Alias Sane" — the contact sheet that became an icon
This contact sheet shows the session Brian Duffy photographed in 1973 for David Bowie's album "Aladdin Sane". In sixteen shots, you can see the genesis of one of pop culture's most recognizable images: the lightning bolt across Bowie's face, here largely still in black and white, with only one frame — the ultimately chosen shot — in color. That single colored photo would become the cover of an album that merged glam rock, theater, and persona change into something new. The contact sheet shows how photography works: not as one perfect moment, but as a series of small decisions — a glance, an angle, a shade — until the right image presents itself.
