This large 19th-century wooden door from a traditional Andalusian country house in Málaga, southern Spain, transformed by an expressive hand-painted composition of tuna. The painting, believed to date from the late 20th century, brings the spirit of the Mediterranean to a piece of rural Andalusian history. Weathered timber and luminous marine imagery come together in a work that evokes the landscape of coastal Málaga, where the mountains meet the sea. Against a weathered brick-red ground, the fish unfold in shades of blue, gray and silvery white. Their changing scale and opposing directions create movement across the elongated surface, with a broad central tuna anchoring the composition. Dark outlines, luminous highlights and visible brushwork lend volume to the bodies, while the warm background intensifies their cool coloring. The door itself remains an essential part of the work. Vertical wooden boards, pronounced grain and rounded metal studs give the painted surface texture and relief. The composition extends across these irregularities, incorporating the physical character of the timber. On the reverse, horizontal wooden braces reveal the door’s construction. The wood shows weathering and deterioration associated with prolonged outdoor exposure, including cracks, surface wear and areas of material loss. We can see that the artist behind this wonderful piece applied a rear fastening system using fibers and white coloring to secure the structure of the door panels. The lower right corner remains particularly fragile, and small wood fragments may detach when the piece is moved. Careful handling is required.
