1950ies Sitwell Lounge Chair
Designed by Hans Bellman for Strässle Söhne & Co, ca. 1955.
This chair with its elegant organic shape is designed by Hans Bellman for Strässle Söhne & Co in the early 1950s and it finally went into production in 1955.
Bellmann was one of the first designers in Europe experimenting with fiberglass molds. This then new technique would allow him to freely construct organic shapes with thin and elegant outer profile, bending seamlessly to form the shape of the armrests. This indeed was the new potential of fiber-plastics he explored.
In difference to the intention of other architects of the period - most prominent Charles and Ray Eames - Bellmann saw it as the technique to realize his formal and esthetic approach rather than aiming at the opportunity of cost-efficient mass production. He instead went in the opposite direction. The form of the fiberglass shell with its delicately shaped armrests, the supporting base that delicately follows the curved form of the seat creating a mold to carry the shell, this all was carried out by hand and highly complex. Bellmann had invented fantastic formal designs and due to the high manufacturing costs only few examples of this chair were sold.
The seat is upholstered in a high quality natural-wool fabric, with black lacquered steel base. The chair is in good vintage condition with few signs of use.
