Today we take a closer look at the elegant Super-Elliptique table, the result of a collaboration between three great Scandinavian designers: Arne Jacobsen Arne Jacobsen , Piet Hein and Bruno Mathsson Bruno Mathsson . At the end of the 1960s, Piet Hein - architect, designer and mathematician - was working on an urban planning project for Sergels Torgs square in Stockholm to solve a traffic problem. He came up with a revolutionary idea for the time: the super elliptical roundabout. This oval variant was truly original for the 1960s! Its characteristic shape makes it a so-called "democratic" table: each person is placed on an equal footing because there are no ends. So if Piet Hein designed the tabletop, what role did Arne Jacobsen and Bruno Mathsson play in its creation? Well, they were the ones who designed the highly original base! The Super-Elliptic model comes in a variety of sizes and shapes; the top can be square, rectangular or round. However, these versions are much less well known than the original model. The base is available in satin-finish polished aluminium or chromed steel. There is a special version of the table with a shaker base, as shown below: The Super-Elliptic table is the perfect reflection of the genius of Jacobsen , Hein and Mathsson . It testifies to their taste for innovative shapes and their desire to design elegant, timeless pieces.
