Around 1912, Le Corbusier built the Villa Jeanneret-Perret, also known as the Maison Blanche. It was at this time that he became an architect in his own right. From 1920 onwards, he worked on the "unité d'habitation", a concept that integrates essential community facilities in a single building: a day nursery, school, shop, library, laundry, swimming pool and meeting places. It was not until 1925 that Le Corbusier tackled furniture, designing his famous chaise longue LC4 . "La Machine à repo s", as its designers amused themselves by calling it, is a continuously adjustable chaise longue that perfectly follows the shape of the human body.
