Rediscover Artistry Elegance with Whoppah
A vintage poster is the quickest way to give a wall a point of view. Right now Whoppah lists 209 vintage posters, a small and carefully chosen group that leans towards the 1980s and 1990s: exhibition posters from museums and galleries, advertising graphics with bold typography, and design prints that document a period when print was still the primary medium for visual culture.
Paper is the main material, sometimes mounted on canvas or set behind glass in a metal or wooden frame. Because these are original printed objects rather than reproductions, small signs of age such as soft creases, slightly warmed paper or a pinhole in a corner are part of the deal and are described honestly in each listing. Some pieces arrive already framed, which saves you the trip to a framer and adds a period-correct finish.
Our curation team reviews every poster before it goes live, paying attention to printing quality, condition and whether it is an original edition. Bid or buy now, and have it shipped insured to any address in Europe.
Brief History Behind
The fascinating history of vintage posters traces back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period marked by revolutionary advancements in printing technology. These posters weren't merely advertisements; they were windows into the world of design, art, and culture of their time. From the sinuous lines of Art Nouveau to the geometric precision of Art Deco, these posters showcase the style and artistic movements that shaped society. Collecting vintage posters should be seen as owning a piece of history, connecting you to the visual narratives that captivated the past.
Main Characteristics
Characterized by vibrant colors, intricate details, and compelling imagery, vintage posters are masterpieces of visual art. Their designs were strategically crafted to catch the eye from a distance, utilizing bold typography and captivating visuals. Whether it's the exuberant graphics of mid-century advertisements or the elegant simplicity of travel posters, each vintage poster is a work of art in its own right. As an accurate representation of vintage art, these posters capture the spirit of their time while transcending it, offering a timeless appeal that continues to captivate modern audiences.
Important Part of Vintage Posters
One can refer to them as windows into cultural evolution and artistic expression. By adorning your walls with vintage posters, you're inviting stories of the past into your present. These pieces are conversation starters, mood enhancers, and historical markers, all in one. How can I tell an original vintage poster from a modern reprint?
Originals from the 1980s and 1990s were usually printed by offset lithography on heavier paper stock, and the printer's name and edition details often appear in small type along the bottom edge. Under magnification, offset prints show a fine rosette dot pattern, while digital reprints show a regular grid. Colours on originals tend to have a softer, slightly aged tone, and the paper itself feels warmer than bright modern stock.
What is the best way to frame and hang a vintage poster?
Use acid-free mounting board and UV-filtering glass or acrylic to slow fading, and never glue the poster down; hinge it with archival tape so it can be removed later. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from bathroom humidity. Standard 1980s and 1990s poster sizes often match A1 or 70 by 100 centimetres, so ready-made frames frequently fit; check the dimensions in the listing first.
How are posters shipped without creasing?
Unframed posters are rolled around a sturdy core and shipped in a rigid tube, or sent flat between two boards for smaller formats. Framed pieces are corner-protected, wrapped and boxed, with a cross of tape across the glass. Shipping via Whoppah is insured against transport damage. If the seller is close by, pickup lets you carry a framed poster home yourself and avoid the risk entirely.
