Product description
Heavy bronze Billiken figurine by Florence Pretz 1908.
In perfect condition and is 9.5 cm high.
Florence Pretz, the designer who patented the Billiken in 1908, was from Kansas City, Missouri. According to Pretz, the name "Billiken" was inspired by the poem "Mr. Moon" by Bliss Carman and Richard Hovey. "Happy Jack", a well-known ivory carver from Alaska, was already making figurines in the early 1900s that closely resembled the Billiken. Osaka, Japan has its own Billiken statue, where the figurine is incredibly popular. The Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic in Chicago has been held annually since 1929 and is the largest African-American parade in the United States.
