ZEUS Noto BIG IRONY Table | Maurizio Peregalli | 238 Cm
Large original BIG IRONY dining table / work table by ZEUS Noto Milano, designed by Maurizio Peregalli in 2000.
An impressive example of Italian minimalist and industrial design: extremely reduced in form, yet pronounced through scale, material, and surface. No decoration and no material pretending to be anything other than what it is – the beauty lies entirely in the proportions and the character of the steel.
The BIG IRONY consists of a large rectangular top and four powerful legs, entirely made of black phosphated sheet steel. The detachable legs are 10 × 10 cm and extend almost seamlessly from the top. This creates a particularly clear, almost monolithic architectural form.
Material & Patina
It is precisely the use of materials that makes the BIG IRONY special.
ZEUS deliberately chose not to apply an opaque lacquer to the steel. The sheet steel is phosphated, thereby retaining its visible irregularities, nuances, and industrial character. The material is not hidden under a perfect, uniform finish but is allowed to show what it is.
Use and time are also allowed to become visible.
The tabletop of this particular piece features a distinct patina built up through years of use, with color variations, stains, rings, streaks, and other signs of wear. With many pieces of furniture, such marks would be considered merely wear; with the BIG IRONY, however, they are an integral part of the design concept.
ZEUS itself states that the BIG IRONY is deliberately not painted due to the characteristic irregularity of the surface, and that daily use causes stains and an ever-developing patina.
As a result, no two used BIG IRONY tables develop exactly the same surface. This particular piece has since acquired a particularly lively, almost painterly steel surface. See the detail photos for a good impression of the patina present. Designer
Maurizio Peregalli (1951) is co-founder and creative director of ZEUS and is known for his exploratory approach to industrial materials and his radical reduction of form: for him, material, construction, and use constitute the actual design.
ZEUS Noto
The Milanese ZEUS was founded in 1984 and holds a distinct position within Italian design. The collection is manufactured in Italy using a combination of industrial design language and artisanal production. Metal plays a leading role; finishes such as phosphating are used precisely to reveal the original material and the influence of time.
Style
The BIG IRONY combines Italian minimalism with a raw industrial aesthetic. The table has an architectural and almost brutalist quality due to its enormous rectangular surface, heavy square legs, and uncompromising use of materials.
At the same time, its extremely simple silhouette ensures that it is surprisingly versatile. Beautiful in a minimalist or industrial interior, but equally striking as a stark contrast between wood, art, antiques, or colorful designer chairs. With a length of 238 cm, it is a generous dining table, conference table, or work table with a strong visual presence without complicated design.

These marks are distinctly in keeping with the material concept of the BIG IRONY and give the steel its weathered, unique character.
A monumental Italian design table for those seeking the exact combination of minimalist form, industrial material, and a surface that continues to live with use.
