Rare Kokeshi by Yuji Kawase (1938–).
Yuji Kawase (川瀬裕司, active since the 1980s) is a Japanese Sōsaku (creative) kokeshi artist from Gunma Prefecture. He belongs to a later generation of makers who continue the creative kokeshi tradition with a contemporary, refined aesthetic.
His work is characterized by a careful balance of form, line, and decoration. Kawase’s kokeshi exude a sense of calm and harmony, demonstrating a clear focus on proportion and brushwork. In doing so, they align with the more understated style within the modern Sōsaku movement.
Silhouettes ranging from slender to rounded, featuring fluid lines and balanced proportions.
Serene faces with subtle smiles and delicate brushstrokes.
Decoration featuring floral and leaf motifs, rendered in warm wood and earth tones.
Yuji Kawase’s kokeshi are prized by collectors of contemporary Japanese kokeshi for their tranquil appearance, technical refinement, and timeless aesthetic.
Yuji Kawase has received awards including:
The 1973 Modern Kokeshi Academy Exhibition Award and the
Japan Modern Kokeshi Craftsman Association Award.
