A charming and exceptionally rare ceramic cat statue from the famous ceramics region of Staffordshire, England. Whereas most figures from this period represent dogs, this is a solitary kitten in a reclining position - a form rarely preserved.
The cat is hand modeled in faience and finished with a glossy crackle glaze. The expression is lively and naive, with black-brown spots, brightly painted eyes and a subtle red collar. There is a small air hole in the back, typical of the firing technique of hollow figures in the 19th century.
The set breathes the atmosphere of early Victorian mantle pieces, where such figures served as decorative pets over the fireplace.
