Condition: Frame and upholstery are in good condition with slight signs of use. The seat padding has been replaced. The foam in the ottoman has hardened and should be replaced. Yngve Ekström was a Swedish furniture designer, woodcarver, and architect. Ekström never underwent formal training and was self-taught. As a child, he was passionately devoted to music, drawing, painting, and—above all—woodcarving. Inspired by furniture exhibits at the Röhsska Museum of Design and Craft Art in Gothenburg, Ekström began to focus increasingly on furniture making as a young adult. In 1944, he and his brother Jerker founded the successful furniture company "ESE-möbler" (later "Swedese AB"). The brothers conceived the idea of offering furniture that could be disassembled for easy transport and self-assembly. The flat-packed components were supplied with the appropriate hex key—a concept that IKEA would later use to establish itself as a global corporation. Alongside the 1956 Lamino armchair, the Ruster Lounge Chair offered here is one of Yngve Ekström’s most famous designs. He remained active in his company until his death in 1988. Ekström’s designs are featured in various permanent collections, including those of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1999, the Swedish magazine *Sköna Hem* named the chair the "Best Swedish Furniture Design of the 20th Century."
