Finland. He was also a professor and later rector of the University of Art and Design in Helsinki.
Yrjö Kukkapuro studied architecture under Ilmari Tapiovaara at the Institute of Industrial Arts. After graduating, he founded his own studio in Helsinki in 1959: Studio Kukkapuro. His work focused on the combination of aesthetics and ergonomics. His most famous work, the Karuselli Chair offered here, is a prime example of this creative approach. Created after several years of development, the chair was first presented at the Cologne Furniture Fair in 1965 and caused an international sensation. The chair was included in the collections of the MoMA/New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum/London and the Guggenheim Museum/Bilbao, among others. The New York Times even named it the most comfortable chair in the world in 1975. In Germany, the Karuselli was featured in the science fiction television series Raumpatrouille Orion.
Born in 1933 in Wiborg (now Russia) in his grandfather's farmhouse, Kukkapuro died on 8.2.25 in Kauniainen/Finland.
