Product description
Signed Sculptural Studio Ceramic Vase – No. 6, Architectural Postmodern Form, Europe, c. 1980s–1990s
A striking and highly individual piece of European studio ceramics, conceived as much as a sculpture as a functional vessel.
The vase is built around an extraordinarily narrow, upright rectangular body that opens into a small rectangular mouth and descends into two opposing curved, fin-like feet. Seen from the front it has an almost monumental architectural presence; from the side, the body becomes unexpectedly slender and graphic.
Its exterior is finished in a deeply textured charcoal-black to dark metallic glaze, subtly mottled across the surface, while the interior is glazed in contrasting pale cream-white. The severe geometry, restrained palette and unusual balance between vessel and sculpture give the piece a distinctly late-20th-century, postmodern character.
The underside is particularly intriguing. One foot carries a large, highly stylised incised signature or monogram together with the number “94”. The opposite foot is incised “No. 6”. Whether “94” represents a date, work number or another notation cannot presently be established; likewise, “No. 6” may refer to a model, series or individual work.
The maker remains unidentified. The form has been considered by several specialists in European studio ceramics, but no secure attribution has so far been established. Stylistically, the work has been placed broadly within the experimental European vessel-sculpture tradition of the 1980s–1990s.
Its combination of architectural construction, cryptic markings and powerful sculptural silhouette makes it a particularly compelling object for collectors of post-war and contemporary studio ceramics.
