Product description
Elegant writing desk designed by Jules Wabbes and produced by Mobilier Universel, Belgium, circa 1960.
The desk features a black lacquered plywood top, supported by a black lacquered steel frame and a drawer unit with two drawers finished in maple veneer. The original cast metal drawer handles are signed "WABBES", a distinctive detail found on documented examples from Mobilier Universel.
Jules Wabbes (1919-1974) is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the Belgian post-war design world. He was known for his uncompromising attention to materials, craftsmanship, and functionality, and his furniture remains highly sought after by collectors and architects worldwide.
A pull-out writing surface, integrated beneath the top, offers additional workspace without compromising the efficient proportions of the desk. The visible metal drawer slides and the carefully considered construction reflect Wabbes' dedication to craftsmanship, durability, and functionality. The combination of warm maple veneer, black lacquered surfaces, and refined metal details creates a balanced composition that perfectly illustrates the designer's architectural approach to furniture design. The desk is both visually understated and highly functional, and remains remarkably contemporary, more than six decades after its creation.
In very good vintage condition with light signs of use consistent with its age. Light wear and patina on the wood, the lacquered surfaces, and the metal frame.
