Product description
A young woman moves across the decaying staircase of an abandoned villa, surrounded by peeling walls and encroaching greenery. The movement of her figure contrasts with the stillness of the forgotten interior; thus, an image emerges that hovers somewhere between memory and disappearance.
The original photo was taken by me in 1976 on black-and-white film. Fifty years later, I revisited this analog image and transformed it into a cyanotype, using one of the oldest photographic printing techniques.
The cyanotype process was invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel. For this work, the paper is hand-coated with a light-sensitive liquid and exposed to UV sunlight. After exposure, the print is developed in water, revealing the characteristic, deep Prussian blue tones of the cyanotype.
This is not a digital print, giclée, or lithograph. Each cyanotype is an individually crafted photographic object. The manual application of the liquid, exposure to sunlight, and the development process create subtle differences in tone, texture, and brushstrokes, making each print unique.
Created in 2026 on Hahnemühle Platinum Rag (300 g/m²), a high-quality, acid-free fine art paper that is extremely suitable for alternative photographic processes.
