Short Biography
Sarike Gaillard is an artist, designer, and concept developer. In her work, she connects art, people, and society. She explores themes such as identity, movement, vulnerability, and perspective. Her visual language moves between figuration and abstraction, in which color, texture, and layering play an important role. Drawing on her background in Industrial Design and illustrative design, she consciously leaves room for the viewer's own interpretation.
Description of the Painting
In this expressive portrait, the profile of a woman fills almost the entire canvas. Her head is tilted back, making the face appear open and vulnerable. The gaze is not directed at the viewer, but upwards and beyond the frame. This gives the work a sense of surrender, longing, and inner movement.
The skin is built up from powerful layers of red, green, yellow, turquoise, and black. The colors do not literally follow reality, but rather seem to reveal emotions and energy. As a result, the portrait becomes not only an image of a person, but also of an inner state. The dark hair flows in long, curved brushstrokes along the face, forming a strong contrast with the bright colors in the skin. The paint is visible, rough, and applied in layers. Scratches, smudges, and various textures remain part of the image and enhance the intensity.
The upward-turned face can be interpreted as a moment of letting go, gathering strength, or breathing again. The closed or half-closed gaze makes the image simultaneously personal and universal: a quiet moment in which the outside world briefly disappears.
For me, therefore, the work is about inner strength and vulnerability being allowed to coexist.
