Magnificent Willy Rizzo Backgammon Game Table
An iconic Italian Mid-Century backgammon game table by Willy Rizzo, featuring an elegant combination of stainless steel and brass. The table is distinguished by its reversible playing surface, with a brown top, green underside and a refined frame crafted from stainless steel and polished brass. The playing surface is made of leather and peccary leather.
Willy Rizzo was an Italian photographer and designer, renowned for his luxurious furniture designs of the 1970s and 1980s.
Period: 1960–1980
Dimensions:
Width: 85 cm; Height: 75 cm; Depth: 85 cm
Provenance:
According to the label attached to the table, it was formerly owned by Anita Kupsch, a German actress known for her work in theatre and television, as well as a voice actress.
The Hilton Kolonnade Hotel, associated with the table's provenance, was the first American-style luxury hotel in West Berlin.
Condition Report:
To restore the frame to its original appearance, it requires sanding followed by polishing. As visible in the photographs, certain areas of the brass show discolouration, while the stainless steel is scratched in various places across the frame. Apart from these imperfections, the frame is free from defects. There are no breaks, cracks or dents.
The backgammon playing surface remains playable, however, restoration of the leather is recommended. Over the years, the playing surface has been cheaply repainted, as visible in the photographs. The leather therefore requires thorough cleaning followed by a new lacquer finish.
The green reverse side of the playing surface shows several signs of wear and should either be thoroughly cleaned or reupholstered.
A distinctive collector's piece combining Italian Mid-Century design, luxurious materials and an intriguing provenance.
