About this seller
ProfessionalProduct description
A beautiful pair of porcelain dog figurines, manufactured by William Lowe. These detailed figurines feature delicate floral motifs and are a charming addition to any exclusive collection. The dogs sit on elegant green cushions with golden accents. Perfect for lovers of antiques and Decorative Objects.
These types of porcelain "hooker-dogs" were extremely popular with the English middle class during the heyday of British Queen Victoria. She tolerated no 'immoral behavior', and ladies of the night performed their work under the guise of figurine sales. Whoever bought the dogs could also buy the rest. The figurines also got their name from the old custom of prostitutes to turn the figurines with their snout towards the room when a client was inside, and with their snout towards the street when the lady was available.
