Description of the Painting
In this painting, an almost dreamlike waterscape unfolds in deep shades of blue, grey, white, and black. Between high, rocky, or city-like banks, a few light sailboats navigate through a narrow passage. The white sails stand out against the dark surroundings, thus becoming the silent bearers of direction, freedom, and movement.
The composition possesses a strong sense of depth. The viewer's gaze is naturally drawn onto the water, passing between the tall forms on either side, towards the boats in the center and the distance. This creates a sense of journey, transition, and open space, despite the enclosed surroundings.
Striking are the long, vertical brushstrokes in the sky, which evoke rain, mist, or falling light. They lend the work an almost meditative atmosphere. The small birds reinforce that sense of space and breath. At the same time, the horizontal white accents provide rhythm and subtly break open the vertical movement.
The painting strikes a beautiful balance between figuration and abstraction. The boats, the water, and the banks are recognizable, yet remain painted loosely enough to leave room for imagination. As a result, the work is not only about a place, but also about a feeling: being on a journey, letting yourself be carried, finding a course between darkness and light.
The light sails can be interpreted as signs of hope and direction. They move through a landscape that appears grand and sometimes enclosed, yet in which space is constantly created to move forward.
