Product description
Sometimes all it takes is a face to carry a story across nearly three centuries. This remarkable vintage wall plaque features the portrait of Lady Elizabeth Hamilton, painted in 1758 by Sir Joshua Reynolds ( ), a towering figure in 18th-century British painting and future first president of the Royal Academy. Young Elizabeth is depicted seated in a landscape, dressed in a sumptuous gown with generous volume. A delicate bouquet of flowers rests in her hands. The ribbons, lace, rich fabric, and the small shoe peeking out from under her dress all point to her aristocratic British background; yet, Reynolds never allows ceremony to overshadow childhood. Her face remains gentle, almost pensive, as if momentarily distracted from the long posing session. Lady Elizabeth Hamilton was the daughter of James Hamilton, 6th Duke of Hamilton, and Elizabeth Gunning, Duchess of Hamilton and Brandon. The painting was commissioned for her mother when the child was only a few years old. Here, Reynolds fully displays all the elegance of 18th-century English portraiture: a child depicted with the conventions reserved for the great families of her time, yet the painter preserves an astonishing presence and genuine delicacy. The original work, a significant oil on canvas measuring 117 × 84 cm, is now held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, after passing through several generations and prestigious collections. In the second half of the 20th century, this old portrait finds new life with our decorative plaque. The image is reproduced on a thick compressed wood panel, whose intentionally irregular outline remains visible. The surface receives a glossy enameled finish, particularly luminous, which gives the colors and the portrait a depth very different from that of a simple framed printed reproduction. The reverse side, left unfinished, fully reveals the material of the panel and retains its wall hanging system. A singular, warm, and deeply decorative piece, for those who appreciate objects that don't just adorn a wall but discreetly open a window to another era. Dimensions: approximately 33 × 26 cm. Impeccable condition.
