Description
The Panton Chair is undoubtedly Verner Panton's most famous and perhaps most important design. Its exceptional and memorable form, combined with the innovative production techniques associated with this piece of furniture, has made it an icon of 20th-century chair design.
Panton demonstrably explored the idea of a cantilever chair made from a single piece of material as early as 1956, in connection with a furniture competition held by the WK-Möbel company. Around 1958/59, he created design sketches that clearly point toward the Panton Chair. Shortly afterward, Panton had a 1:1 scale model of his chair idea made from deep-drawn polystyrene (not suitable for sitting), which was intended to help him find a manufacturer. This surviving model, which is often mistakenly referred to as a prototype, is now part of the Vitra Design Museum's collection and shows clear differences from the later Panton Chair.
After Panton came into contact with Willi Fehlbaum, then head of Vitra, in the early 1960s, and Fehlbaum signaled his willingness to develop the chair for mass production, Panton moved to Basel with his family. However, it wasn't until between 1965 and 1967 that development work on the chair was intensively pursued. In August 1967, the Panton Chair was presented to the public for the first time. Since then, the chair has been produced in four different versions using four different plastic materials and, accordingly, various production technologies.
Both economic and aesthetic reasons were decisive for the change in materials. All versions were developed in close collaboration between the manufacturer and Verner Panton.
The production history of the Panton Chair is as follows:
1967/68
First series production made of cold-pressed, fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin, painted in various colors.
Manufacturer: Herman Miller/Vitra
1968-1971
Second series model made of rigid polyurethane foam, painted in various colors.

The Panton Chair was not in production between 1979 and 1983.
