Product description
Vintage telephone shelf with Formica top and chrome rack.
This object is an authentic vintage telephone shelf (also called a telephone board or small shelving unit).
In the 1950s and 60s, landline telephones were often placed in a central location in the hallway or living room. This specific wall unit was perfectly designed for that.
The design consists of a chrome-plated metal tubular frame and a top with a reddish-brown, ribbed top layer (Formica or plastic) and a black edge finish.
• The top: The (often heavy, bakelite) device was placed on this.
• The chrome tubular frame: The bars at the bottom served as an open compartment where the thick telephone book or directory could be slid in.
• This model is a beautiful example of Mid-Century Modern design from the 1950s or early 1960s.
• Because they are smaller than coat racks, they are now very popular as a retro bedside table next to the bed or as a decorative shelf in a small hallway.
Dimensions:
- Top: 50 x 25 cm
- Space between bottom of top and chrome rack approx 12 cm
The rack is in very good condition, no real damage to the shelf and upholstery, nor to the chrome-plated tubes.
Of course, very light signs of use, consistent with the age of this rack
