A small testament to interwar France, a period when sport, education, and the value of effort gained new importance in the upbringing of youth. This antique patinated metal medal bears the name MONGRÉ on its reverse, a reference to the Mongré institution in Villefranche-sur-Saône, an establishment whose history dates back to the 19th century and which long held a significant place in the region's education. The obverse is dedicated to sport. Two athletes are depicted in full motion around a ball, in a particularly dynamic composition. The stylized bodies, the palm decoration, and the medal's highly geometric construction fully belong to the aesthetic vocabulary of the interwar period. The medal is part of the output of Fraisse-Demey, a French company particularly active in the creation of medals, insignias, and sporting awards during this period. In the 1920s and 1930s, these small objects readily transcended the simple realm of reward to adopt the modern lines of their era. Movement, speed, and physical power became subjects in their own right, perfectly suited to the Art Deco aesthetic. Its association with Mongré brings an additional dimension. One can easily imagine this medal being awarded during a sporting event, contest, or competition organized within the institution. Almost a century later, it thus retains something very vivid of that era when educational institutions celebrated their students' achievements with medals intended for keeps. Its antique patina, far from erasing its design, pleasantly highlights the reliefs and today gives it all the charm of an object that has spanned decades. A lovely piece to add to a collection of antique medals, school or sports memorabilia, but also a small decorative object steeped in history. Circa 1930s.
