Product description
This vintage wooden cookie mold depicts Piet. Piet is a character from the Dutch Sinterklaas celebration (December 5th). He is the helper of Sinterklaas (a saint) who comes to the Netherlands every year with his steamboat to bring presents to the children.
This mold is called a 'speculaasplank' in Dutch. Traditionally, these boards are hand-carved from hardwood such as beech or pear wood and used to form spiced dough into detailed cookies.
The tradition of using hand-carved wooden cookie molds in the Netherlands dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Based on its design, material, and carving style, this specific mold likely originates from the mid-20th century (circa 1950-1970), making it approximately 50 to 75 years old. There is a small hole on the back to hang it on a nail or screw on the wall.
