Private sellerProduct description
Vintage Sosaku Kokeshi by Kato Koumei. This specific style is characterized by a minimalist, round head with subtly painted facial features (eyes) in the traditional sumi-e (ink) style. The head rests in a recessed, collar-like neck that transitions into the cylindrical wooden torso. A traditional Japanese poem or text is calligraphed on the torso of this doll, which is typical of a number of his more subdued, poetic designs. Unlike traditional kokeshi (dento), which follow strict regional patterns, sōsaku kokeshi offered the artist complete freedom to experiment with shapes, wood types, and engravings. Kato Koumei was a Sōsaku Kokeshi artisan whose work focused primarily on themes such as youth/children and rural or traditional Japanese peasant life. His dolls were made on a lathe, often utilizing different types of wood to create contrast. Koumei's work is deeply rooted in Japanese history and culture. His most famous designs are inspired by rural life in the 1920s and 1930s. Through these, he often depicted the innocence and hard work of farm children toiling in the fields. Instead of simply painting the wood, Koumei pioneered combining different types of wood to create contrast. Famous vintage creations by his hand bear titles that align with his favorite themes, such as "Siblings" and "Kodomo no Noka" (Farm Workers/Children of the Countryside). The height is 12 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Please note: The items are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or cracks/dents present to varying degrees.
