The tile factory Gilliot & Cie in Hemiksem was founded in the late 19th century and grew into one of the largest ceramic producers in Europe.
Producing hundreds of thousands of tiles a day and employing more than 1,000 workers at its peak, the factory supplied tiles to prestigious projects such as metro stations in Paris and the Antwerp pedestrian tunnel.
Their style ranged from art nouveau to art deco, with designer Joseph Roelants as one of the artistic driving forces.
After a merger in the 1950s and acquisition by the Royal Sphinx, the curtain finally fell on the factory in 1977.
Today the heritage lives on in the Gilliot & Roelants Tile Museum in Hemiksem Abbey, where an impressive collection of historic tiles and designs can be admired.
