Product description
Beautiful vintage coffee table, designed by the Norwegian designer Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Haug Snekkeri in the 1960s. Afdal belonged to the generation of designers who put Norwegian modernism on the international map, but his work is surprisingly less known today than that of many Danish contemporaries.
This piece comes from Rotterdam, from the estate of its first owners. The teak wood has been carefully sanded, nourished, and refinished with a protective silk-matte finish. This brings out the warm color and wood grain beautifully. Small traces of use have been deliberately preserved and contribute to the authentic character of the table.
This design particularly shows its strength in its construction. The generous top is supported by a slender, open base with long rounded rails and slim legs that taper slightly downwards. The top ends on both short sides in subtly rising solid teak ends. Below the top is a pull-out drawer. The visible, contrasting finger joints at the corners and the simply shaped wooden handle also make this practical component a striking detail.
Despite its generous size, the whole appears surprisingly light and refined. The wide horizontal top contrasts beautifully with the open base, while the rounded shapes and visible joints make the table interesting from every angle. A strong piece of Norwegian design, in which material, construction, and craftsmanship naturally come together.
