Description
A striking duo of Rosenthal Studio-Line vases from the “Vibrations” series designed by Dieter Mankau, combining the dramatic presence of a large silver porcelain vase with the sculptural clarity of a smaller white version.
The tall vase, finished in reflective silver porcelain, creates a powerful visual effect through its glossy metallic surface and deeply structured relief. The smaller white vase echoes the same design language but appears softer and more architectural, allowing the sculptural indentations and rhythmic pattern to emerge through light and shadow.
The design itself is characteristic of the postmodern design language of the late 1970s–1980s, where repetition, movement, and surface modulation become central visual elements. The “Vibrations” pattern consists of organic, crater-like depressions arranged in vertical rhythm, producing a dynamic surface that changes dramatically depending on lighting conditions.
The pairing of silver and white enhances the sculptural qualities of the forms: one reflecting the environment like polished metal, the other emphasizing form through subtle light contrasts.
Designer
Dieter Mankau (1935–2013) was one of the notable designers associated with Rosenthal Studio-Line, the experimental design division of Rosenthal founded by Philip Rosenthal in the 1960s. The Studio-Line series invited artists, architects, and designers to explore porcelain as a sculptural medium beyond traditional tableware.
Mankau’s work is distinguished by its exploration of surface movement and tactile structures, translating kinetic visual effects into porcelain form. His “Vibrations” series exemplifies this approach, where relief patterns create the impression of motion across the vessel’s surface.
Rosenthal Studio-Line pieces by designers such as Tapio Wirkkala, Victor Vasarely, Bjørn Wiinblad, and Dieter Mankau became icons of modern German porcelain design and remain highly sought after by collectors.
Design
The cylindrical form is intentionally minimal, allowing the sculptural relief to dominate the visual impression. The repeating depressions create a rhythmic surface reminiscent of acoustic waves or rippling energy, giving the series its name.
The silver finish adds an almost futuristic quality, while the white porcelain version reveals the full depth of the relief through subtle shadow play.
