Rattan has long been the material for casual and warm interiors. This 1960s-1970s rattan magazine rack is a beautiful example: a carefully designed functional piece whose elegant silhouette has lost none of its appeal. Its structure is based on thick bent rattan canes that form two side arches. Between them, thin vertical canes form the two storage compartments, separated by a horizontal crossbar. The joints are secured by carefully executed traditional bindings. The overall design is particularly well-executed: the side arches give the piece a visual lightness that solid wood magazine racks do not possess. Over the decades, the rattan has acquired a beautiful dark honey hue, with that warm, irregular patina that only time can impart. Some natural cracks appear on the thick canes, as well as slight wear on the end of an upper upright. These marks are visible in the photographs and contribute to the piece's authentic character.
