Vintage Naruko kokeshi by Shoji Sakurai (1927–2011).
This Naruko-style kokeshi was crafted by Shoji Sakurai (桜井昭二, 1927–2011), a master craftsman who played a pivotal role in preserving and advancing the post-war Naruko kokeshi tradition.
Born on January 1, 1927, Shoji was the eldest son of the esteemed craftsman Mannojo Sakurai. He began painting kokeshi at a young age under the guidance of his mother, Kou. Deeply rooted in the Naruko tradition, Shoji carried on the family legacy while mentoring the next generation of artisans, including Isamu Igarashi, Yasuo Yusa, and his own son, Akihiro.
This piece displays the classic characteristics of a Naruko kokeshi: a round head featuring straight bangs and side hair painted with bold brushstrokes, and a body adorned with finely painted chrysanthemum motifs in vibrant red, yellow, and green hues. Shoji remained active throughout his life, even demonstrating his skills on the foot-operated lathe just months before his passing in 2011. This doll stands as a testament to his lifelong dedication and artistic talent within the world of traditional kokeshi dolls.
The height is 27 cm; please refer to the photos for the condition.
