Product description
Vintage Kokeshi by Minori. Minori is a well-known maker of Sōsaku Kokeshi (creative or modern kokeshi dolls). Unlike traditional (Dentō) kokeshi, which follow strict regional patterns, Sōsaku kokeshi offered the artist complete freedom in form, color, and design.
The artist was primarily active in the mid to late 20th century, particularly during the Shōwa period (1960s and 1970s).
Minori dolls are known for their extremely serene, dreamy, and soft faces, often depicted with closed eyes or a subtle, contented smile.
Many designs feature a distinctive bulbous or slightly oversized head, often with a sleek, dark-dyed bob hairstyle.
The wooden bodies are beautifully hand-painted. This doll is not just a Decorative Object, but celebrates one of Japan's most famous summer festivals: the Sendai Tanabata Matsuri (Star Festival), which is held every year in August in Miyagi Prefecture.
The round object the doll is holding represents a Hanagasa (flower hat) or a festive shield.
Traditional colored Tanabata paper lanterns (Chochin) with hanging tassels are painted on this shield. The location is written on the shield in elegant Japanese script: 仙台 (Sendai).
The height is 14 cm; please view the photos for the condition.
Please note: The items are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or small tears/dents present to a greater or lesser extent.
