Private sellerProduct description
Vintage kokeshi by Hajime Miyashita. The Japanese sosaku kokeshi artist known by the artist name Munehiro (often written as 宗広) is Miyashita Munehiro (usually known by his first name Hajime Miyashita / 宮下はじめ); consequently, the signature at the bottom of this doll is Munehiro.
Munehiro’s dolls often depict atmospheric, melancholic, or poetic Japanese scenes. Examples include young girls in traditional attire, figurines with kimono-like wood patterns, or dolls carrying elements such as an umbrella, a hat (okappa-style), or seasonal flowers. He was born in 1940 in the city of Yonezawa in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan.
He began his career as an apprentice in the traditional kokeshi style, where he learned the techniques from master craftsman Kobayashi Kichitaro (a representative of the Yamagata-Sakunami tradition).
From his traditional foundation, he transitioned to the modern sosaku kokeshi movement. His work is distinguished by innovative, three-dimensional forms and a refined, poetic aesthetic.
Throughout his career, Munehiro won numerous prestigious awards at national Japanese kokeshi competitions and exhibitions. On several occasions, he received the highest honor, including the Prime Minister's Prize (Naikakusoridajin-sho). Even the Japanese Imperial Family (Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako) were among the collectors of his work.
His active career as a woodturner and artist continued until 2006, when he retired after his workshop in the city of Maebashi was destroyed by fire.
