Product description
The IKEA PS "Mier" children's play table is an iconic vintage design piece from an older IKEA PS collection. The table is known for its playful design, in which the legs are shaped like ant legs. The vintage IKEA PS "Mier" children's table is a beloved collector's item that can currently only be found on second-hand marketplaces. The IKEA PS "Mier" children's table (officially the Swedish product name: Fisken, but popularly known as the ant leg table) holds an interesting place in the design history of the Swedish home furnishings retailer IKEA. Democratic Design: The very first PS line was presented at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1995. The goal was to make high-end, avant-garde design affordable for the general public according to the principle of Democratic Design (form, function, quality, sustainability, and a low price). Creative freedom: Within the PS lines, top internal and external designers were given free rein to experiment with bold shapes and materials, separate from the regular, more traditional IKEA assortment. The Design and Philosophy The "Ant" children's table — released in one of the early PS lines (late '90s / early '00s) — perfectly embodies the playful functionality that characterizes the design lines. Organic design: Instead of standard straight wooden or metal tubular legs, the table was given thin, elegantly curved metal legs that immediately evoked the anatomy of an ant. Child-friendly minimalism: The tabletop was given an organic, rounded kidney or triangular shape without sharp corners, making it both an artistic object in the living room and a safe piece of play furniture for children. From utilitarian object to design classic When the table came onto the market, it was an affordable and functional piece of furniture for the children's room. Over the years, however, the status of this object has completely changed: Vintage hype: Like other early PS designs (such as the iconic IKEA PS 1995 clock in the shape of a keyhole), the ant table has grown into a sought-after vintage collector's item. Because the table was produced in a limited edition at the time and many units were discarded due to intensive use by children, stock has become scarce. The furniture, known for its playful, wavy shapes and ant legs, was officially released as the IKEA PS "Flitig" multifunctional children's table/play bench. Introduced in 2003 as part of the IKEA PS "Unlimited Play" collection. Original designers: The Swedish design duo Eva & Peter Moritz. Around the same period, they also designed the legendary "Surrig" bee chair for the same children's line. Origin: This specific plastic item was produced in Italy at the time. The IKEA PS "Ant" children's play table is an iconic and now rare piece of vintage designer furniture from the IKEA PS series. The play table is instantly recognizable by its organic, hourglass-like shape reminiscent of an ant's body, combined with curved metal legs. Key Features: Design & Shape: Postmodern and organically shaped plastic tabletop in the shape of an ant. Material: Durable and easy-to-clean plastic supported by a sturdy black metal base. Functionality: Designed as a multifunctional play and craft table where children can sit comfortably thanks to the unique curves. In very good condition, storage compartment with lid for Lego, for example. Length: 98 cm Width: 35 cm Height: 31 cm
