The authentic vintage rug with expressive, painterly colors and a design characteristic of Western Iran. This hand-woven Hamadan rug from the 1960s is an example of a traditional Persian village rug an object where utilitarian function meets local handicraft culture. The presented piece has a particularly attractive, maximalist character. Its composition is formed by a monumental, geometrically shaped central medallion, surrounded by rhythmically placed floral motifs and small ornaments. The entire piece is completed by an elaborate border system. The palette is deep and refined: burgundy red, navy blue, black, terracotta, cream, and muted ochre. The contrast between the dark, almost wine-red background and the intermittent accents of other shades is intriguing. This gives the rug a depth characteristic of older textiles: on the one hand, it is decoratively rich, on the other, it remains tonally calm. Years of use and natural aging have further softened the colors, giving the surface a distinctive, uneven tone. This patina makes the rug look anything but contemporary, representing an authentic object with its own history. The elaborate border acts as a picture frame. Together with the central medallion, it creates a composition that works well in contemporary interiors, especially those based on the juxtaposition of contemporary architecture with vintage objects. The rug is handcrafted, with a sense of rhythm and ornamentation characteristic of Persian country rugs. The weaving structure visible on the reverse, the irregularities of individual elements, and the subtle differences in the pattern confirm the handmade nature of the piece. HISTORICAL OVERVIEW The name Hamadan does not denote a single factory or a single design. It is a broad category of carpets made in the city of Hamadan and in numerous towns and villages in the surrounding region in western Iran. The diversity of local traditions means that individual carpets can vary significantly. Hamadan is one of the most important historical centers of the Persian carpet trade. Products from a wide area of the region passed through local bazaars, which over time led to the term "Hamadan" becoming a recognizable trade category. This tradition developed particularly strongly in the 19th and 20th centuries, when Persian village carpets began to reach European and American markets. The region is characterized by a geometric discipline of composition. Central medallions, rhombuses and hexagons, stylized flowers, boteh motifs, and Herati/Mahi patterns often appear. A strong, multi-layered border is also typical, providing order to the composition and giving the carpet an almost architectural character. In the case of Hamadan, technique is also important. Many rugs from this region are made on a cotton warp with a wool pile, using a single-weft construction a solution characteristic of much of the region's production. Hamadan rugs are popular in both local and international markets, valued for their durability, aesthetic appeal, and variety of designs. The traditional art of Persian rug weaving is a national cultural heritage of Iran. In 2010, the art of weaving rugs from Fars and Kashan were added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. They are a popular choice for both traditional and modern interiors. The rug is in its original vintage condition, with clear signs of wear from years of use, which should be considered an integral part of its character. It has uneven pile wear, abrasions within the rug's field, unevenly preserved fringes (with visible shortening, loosening, and individual missing pieces), edge wear, and in some places, a loss of the original pile density is visible. There are natural tonal variations and local color changes due to age and exposure. The surface has the patina and texture variations characteristic of a vintage rug.
