The hand-woven rug from the Hamadan-Kamseh region of western Iran, dating back to the 1960s. It embodies everything that makes Persian weaving so compelling for contemporary interiors: a striking design, a deep yet subtly muted palette, the charming irregularities of hand-craftsmanship, and a refined patina born of time. It is densely woven from locally sourced, pure wool. The central composition features a brick-pink field framed by an elaborate dark navy border. Its surface is adorned with small, stylized flowers, floral rosettes, medallions, and geometric shapes, scattered in a manner characteristic of traditional Persian weaving. The composition avoids rigid symmetry; indeed, these subtle variations, shifts, and the spontaneity of the design are among the most fascinating aspects of its handmade nature. The rug features natural dyes. The design is framed by a multi-layered border in shades of red, navy, ecru, brown, and olive green. Its ornamentation includes geometric meanders, stylized flowers, leaves, and small motifs reminiscent of the *boteh*. A bold navy tone guides the eye around the central field, lending the rug a distinctive, graphic contrast. The color palette is soft and elegantly subdued: madder red, terracotta, powder pink, indigo, navy, cream, sandy beige, olive, and warm brown. Years of use have subtly softened the wool pile, bringing out its natural tonal variations. "Abrash"—subtle tonal variations within the same color resulting from differences in yarn batches and the dyeing process—is also visible. In antique rugs, this is a feature that contributes to their unique character. The rug is a unique, handcrafted functional object; its aesthetic value stems from the passage of time, the individuality of its craftsmanship, and its visible history. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Hamadan is one of Iran's most important historical centers for the carpet trade. The term "Hamadan" does not refer to a single, strictly defined workshop or pattern; rather, it encompasses a vast area of western Iran where hundreds of village weaving centers have operated for generations. The finished rugs were brought to Hamadan, where the bazaar served as a major hub for collection and trade. This decentralized tradition is central to the aesthetic of Hamadan rugs. Instead of rigidly repeated workshop patterns, one finds geometric compositions, bold borders, medallions, floral motifs, *boteh* designs, and variations of the *herati* pattern—all interpreted in unique ways by individual communities and weaving families. Contrasting combinations of red and navy blue are also characteristic. Traditional rugs from this region were handmade, often on vertical looms. A distinctive structural feature of many Hamadan rugs is the use of a single weft thread, which creates a characteristic rhythm on the back of the rug and is associated with the region's specific weaving technique. The name "Kamseh" (also spelled Khamseh or Kamse) appears in the classification of Hamadan-region rugs, designating one of the local weaving areas. Before shipment, the rug will undergo professional cleaning and be ready for use. The rug is in original vintage condition. Its state reflects its age, showing signs of use, natural surface irregularities, localized areas of wear, and the kind of fraying along the edges and fringes typical of older rugs.
