Vintage signed Maki Kokeshi. This unique "tree bark kokeshi" (maki-kokeshi) is a beautiful example of a creative (sōsaku) kokeshi where the natural shape and texture of a tree trunk have been preserved. The doll is crafted from a natural tree trunk, with the rough, dark tree bark remaining visible on the sides and back. The wood has a warm, organic appearance. The large, spherical head rests on a neck piece and has minimalist painted black hair with striking white bows/accents on the sides and top. The face is kept simple with closed, calm eyes and a subtle red dot as mouth/nose. On the smoothed front of the trunk, a Japanese sailing boat has been applied with fine white brushstrokes and Japanese calligraphy in black.
The kokeshi is signed by the maker.
The height is 24 cm; for the condition, please view the photos.
Note: The items are not new, so scratches, discolorations, and/or cracks/dents will always be present to a greater or lesser extent.
