An icon of modern furniture design: The Eames Lounge Chair with Ottoman, designed in 1956 by Charles & Ray Eames, combines the idea of a classic club armchair with the lightness and constructive precision of modernism. To this day, the design is one of the most famous design classics of the 20th century. This original, Vitra-made example is presented in a particularly classic combination of dark-grained wooden shells, black leather, and a black base. The curved molded plywood shells enclose the generous leather upholstery, creating the characteristic low silhouette of the Lounge Chair. The matching Ottoman consistently continues the form, material, and upholstery. Vitra has been manufacturing the Lounge Chair since the 1950s and describes rosewood as the classic wood variant of the design. Important for this example is its authentic vintage condition: The black leather shows clearly visible signs of wear due to age and use. Especially on the armrests, there is abrasion, fine cracking, and a distinct patina; the seat and back cushions also show corresponding traces of use. On the veneered wooden shells, there are minor chips or damage to the edges in places. These signs of wear are documented in the detailed pictures and have been taken into account in the pricing. Technically and aesthetically, the armchair remains what has distinguished it for almost seven decades: an exceptionally comfortable seating furniture and at the same time one of the most influential objects in design history.
