Product description
Vintage dou grain measure in elm wood, from China. A cereal measuring box from the first half of the 20th century.
The dou (斗) was the capacity measure used to weigh out and share grain in markets and granaries.
The four wooden sides are joined with fine comb joints and an iron strip runs along the rim; two side lugs serve as handles. One side reads 三十五年 (year thirty-five), without a legible era name, and black-painted characters remain on the front.
The wood has turned a chocolate brown with lighter areas where the grain rubbed, and the iron on the rim is weathered by use.
On a low table, a shelf or in a kitchen, it serves as a container for fruit, kindling or plants.
