Chinese bridal wardrobes were traditionally given to her by the bride's parents after she got married. She often went to live very far away from her in-laws, and of course this was often accompanied by enormous homesickness. To alleviate this a little, a cupboard from the parental home was given to her. Because they often had to travel far with the cupboards, they were made dismountable. The cabinets you buy nowadays are all glued together, but you can still see the pin and hole joints, especially in the antique cabinets. Craftsmanship in its purest form. What can still be done (with cabinets where the doors are hinged on wooden dowels) is to lift the doors and often the shelves and drawers completely out of the cabinet. This makes a huge difference in weight during transport. The round moon plate that traditionally adorns Chinese bridal cabinets represents unity and marital happiness. When the doors are open, the half moons each symbolize an individual; closed, they form a unit. The moon, symbolizing fertility. Traditionally, Chinese bridal cabinets are placed opposite a doorway. but nowadays, of course, you just place them wherever you have room for them.
