Product description
Vintage Chameko Urchin kokeshi by Masao Watanabe. Chameko Urchin is best translated as "naughty street urchin". The face features large, wide-open eyes in the sumi-e style, fine hairs on the forehead, and remnants of bows on the sides of the head. The work consists of three parts: the head, the haori (a short jacket), and the base of the doll. The use of two different types of wood, beech (bichi) and magnolia (mokuren), for the body and clothing is very simple. Throughout Japanese history, scraps of material have been used to make kokeshi. This is known as 'mottainai', which means 'not wasting', and is reflected in the workmanship of this jacket, giving it a worn appearance. This natural craftsmanship exudes awe and appreciation for any material that has the potential to create something new. Watanabe-san was born in Fukushima and studied with the traditional Yajirou master Sato Tatsuo from Miyagi Prefecture. He is arguably the most popular and prolific Sosaku Kokeshi artist of the 20th century and began his craft in the early 1950s. His most famous Kokeshi themes are those of 'inocence' (Mushin), and his doll titled Chigo Zakura (Cherry Blossom Child) won the Minister Prize and was presented to the Beatles in 1965 after their performance in Japan with Sir Joseph Lockwood, Chairman of EMI Record Distributors in England. From 1963 to 1981, he won multiple prizes in kokeshi competitions around the world (including the Prime Minister Prize for the works "Chigozskura" in 1963 and "Shojo" in 1981), as well as numerous awards from the Modern Kokeshi Artist Association and JETRO. He was a member of the Nippon Kokeshi Artistic Handicraft Association. His works are on permanent display at the Nuremberg Toy Museum in Germany. The height is 16 cm; please view the photos for the condition. Please note: The items are not new, so there will always be scratches, discoloration, and/or small tears/dents present to a greater or lesser extent.
