Product description
This is a vintage cast resin sculpture depicting a seated Buddha figure. The piece is notable for its dual nature, presenting a traditional spiritual icon that conceals an explicit erotic relief carving on its underside, a feature found in some historical Asian art forms. Heavy sculpture crafted from cast resin has a dark brown finish that emulates the appearance of polished wood. The figure of Budai, or the laughing Buddha, is shown in a relaxed, reclining pose, a symbol of contentment and abundance. His robes are decorated with incised floral and geometric patterns, adding textural detail to the smooth, rounded form of the body. The base contains a detailed, hidden relief carving of an intimate scene. The sculpture is presented in good vintage condition, with a character that reflects its age. The integrity of the casting is sound, and the details of both the main figure and the concealed scene remain distinct and well-preserved. The polished surface shows a consistent patina throughout. As a distinctive decorative object, this piece is well-suited for a collector's cabinet, a personal study, or as an accent on a bookshelf. Its unique combination of overt spiritual symbolism and private, hidden detail makes it a compelling conversation piece for an eclectic interior.
