Inspired by the Roman curule chair
Wonderful footstool with a wooden structure and brown leather seat, made in the 70s. It features double-curved, X-shaped legs, reminiscent of the Roman curule chair (in Latin, sella curulis), a seat reserved for the most distinguished people in society, the magistrates. The seat upholstery is tufted and studded. Tufting is an upholstery technique that consists of creating a diamond-shaped pattern on the fabric and foam, securing the fabric with buttons.
According to Titus Livius, the chair originated from Etruria; however, this type of "folding chair" was already known in the New Kingdom of Egypt. They were usually made of ivory, without a backrest and with low arms. It was easily transportable, for example, so that military leaders could also use it on campaign.
In reality, its use has never been lost, as its form has served as inspiration over the years. For example, the famous Barcelona Chair by Mies van der Rohe is directly inspired by its structure. It even reached China, via the Silk Road.
The perfect blend of classicism and avant-garde.
