An elegant testament to an almost vanished art of entertaining, this table butler is one of those accessories once kept close at hand after a meal. Its lid opens thanks to a small push-button located near the handle, allowing one to discreetly collect table crumbs or ashes without having to directly handle the container. Made of brass, it features a beautiful circular silhouette punctuated at its center by a medallion simply surrounded by a rope-twist motif. The long wooden handle provides a warm contrast to the golden metal and allowed the master or mistress of the house to circulate it with ease. This type of object, also known as a "silent butler," enjoyed considerable success in elegant interiors from the 1930s onwards. The construction and design of this example suggest it dates from around , from an era when table accessories still combined practical function with genuine decorative appeal.
