Product description
This exceptional Victorian octagonal center table was made by the renowned London cabinetmaking firm C. Hindley & Sons, dating to the second half of the 19th century.
The table is a fine example of Victorian furniture influenced by the Aesthetic Movement, combining elaborate architectural detailing with rich materials and carefully balanced proportions.
Its distinctive octagonal tabletop features beautifully figured dark wood veneer, framed by delicate geometric inlay in contrasting lighter tones. The richly decorated ebonized base is supported by four turned and carved legs, each terminating in an elegantly shaped foot fitted with a period brass caster.
Particularly striking is the elaborate understructure, where four spindle-filled stretchers converge around a circular central element, creating an unusually refined and visually engaging composition. Carved floral ornaments, stylized foliage, fluted details, and subtle gilded accents provide a sophisticated contrast against the deep black finish.
C. Hindley & Sons was one of London’s distinguished furniture manufacturers and interior furnishing firms of the Victorian era. Established by Charles Hindley in the early 19th century, the business expanded considerably following its acquisition of the celebrated cabinetmaking firm Miles & Edwards in 1844, taking over its premises at 134 Oxford Street, London. The company became known for its finely crafted furniture and comprehensive interior furnishing services, supplying prestigious private residences and aristocratic households throughout Britain. Its participation in the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862 reflected its established reputation and standing within the British furniture industry. Today, surviving pieces by C. Hindley & Sons are appreciated for their craftsmanship, decorative sophistication, and historical significance.
The table retains its original manufacturer’s stamp beneath the top, reading „C. Hindley & Sons, 134 Oxford St, London,” together with the stamped production or inventory number 21076. The brass caster fittings also bear period manufacturer’s markings, further illustrating the attention to detail characteristic of high-quality Victorian cabinetmaking.
The table has been gently restored, preserving beautiful aged patina, displaying subtle signs of wear consistent with its age and history. These characteristics contribute to its authenticity and distinctive antique character.
With its sculptural silhouette, intricate craftsmanship, and documented London provenance, this remarkable piece would make an elegant centerpiece in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
