DESCRIPTION & HISTORY
The Trojan Horse is a visionary masterpiece created in 1989 — the key year of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the beginning of the collapse of the Soviet bloc.
Through a large ink wash with powerful and dramatic gestures, Slava Saveliev depicts the great wooden war machine: the fortress collapsed not under the blows of an external enemy, but undermined from within by its own contradictions. For this artist who had risked everything against the Soviet regime, this monumental canvas constitutes direct testimony to History proving him right.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: SLAVA SAVELIEV
Russian dissident painter referenced in the Bénézit dictionary, Slava Saveliev is one of the major figures of unofficial Soviet art:
* Heroic artist: Participant in the famous Bulldozer Exhibition (Moscow, 1974) crushed by the KGB, signatory of the letter of the 143 and exhibitor of the group of 20 Moscow artists (1978).
* Resister: Judged in 1979 after barricading himself with five other artists against the police during a clandestine opening in Moscow.
* Parisian exile: Emigrated to Paris in 1982, exhibiting at the Grand Palais (1984), at the Musée russe en exil à Mongeron, in the United States and Germany. He was also president of the Association des Artistes Russes de Paris and a member of the Art-Cloche collective.
